The Bonita Varsity Boys Water Polo is off to a great start this season. The team has been preparing since the summer, while practicing early mornings, playing 12 summer games, and going straight into preseason. “Practice makes perfect” says senior Gary Watson. The Palomares league just started and they won their first game beating Ayala 18-17. The team has a win percentage right now of 0.526 with an overall record of 10-9.
As of right now, Jeffrey Heaton has 45-50 goals for the season and counting. Jeffrey is a junior in the class of 2027 and is one of the top players on the team. Senior Gary Watson is also a top player who has 40 goals along Antonio Finianos, who also has 40 goals so far. Braeden Scoffinger has been playing great defense with 25 steals for the Bearcats.
The Bearcats have continuously improved since the start of the season and they are accustomed to playing alongside each other. The team has strong chemistry that helps them build up a strong mentality to get through games with the final result they want.
The Boys demonstrated this in their first tournament in San Diego over this past weekend, they had a game winning shot with five seconds left.
The team’s main goal for the season is to win league back to back seasons and successfully play in CIF. Coach Unsoeld says “Now we’re the underdog, we have to treat every game like it’s the championship”. They have two big games coming up versus Glendora and Walnut. Overall, the team is holding a good record with high hopes and expectations for the rest of the league. Good luck, Varsity Boys Water Polo!
